"One Company One Job" campaign

A few days ago, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and five other major local business chambers initiated the "One Company One Job" campaign, appealing for member companies' support by having each member company voluntarily provide at least one 12-month trainee position to a new college graduate or higher diploma recipient.

The HKGCC knows that ultimately, the unemployment rate will go down in Hong Kong only if the economy recovers, and free market forces will continue to dictate our employment here. However, it is heartening that many companies, including the smaller ones, have recognized the seriousness of the current unemployment picture and the problems that especially the current college graduates face in this difficult economic time. Positive responses to the campaign from HKGCC members are pouring in.

Wheelock & Company and The Wharf (Holdings) have immediately offered 50 one-year contracted positions to render their support of the campaign. Areas of training range from property development, to logistics, IT, entertainment, public transport and retail businesses.

Chamber Director Dr Eden Woon said: "The Chamber is very pleased to see the responses of our members even in such difficult circumstances for so many companies. We are very moved that many of our SME members have called us to indicate their willingness to volunteer. We note that Wheelock and Wharf are our first two members to have responded to this "One Company One Job" campaign by placing their recruitment ad on newspapers on July 30 for new graduates for a 12-month traineeship. The spirit of support for the Hong Kong community by the business sector cannot be better exemplified by these very proactive, quick, and concrete offers by Wheelock and Wharf."

"In addition," Dr. Woon added, "we are delighted that many other members are following very closely behind Wheelock and Wharf with intended offerings under this campaign, including Wing Tai Corporation, Cheung Kong Holdings, Hutchison Whampoa, Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings, Hongkong Electric Holdings, Sun Hung Kai Properties and Jardine Aviation Services.

The Chamber hopes that interested companies in Hong Kong, whether they belong to any business association or not, volunteer for this worthwhile campaign if they are able to.
