Submarine cable to be laid near Waglan Island
******************************************************

The Government intends to construct and install a submarine cable system in the sea-bed of the Tathong Channel, down to the border of Hong Kong waters near Waglan Island.

The installation of the submarine cable will be carried out by two cable laying vessels that utilise plough-burial operations and jetting operations respectively for simultaneous laying and burial beneath the sea-bed.

The 'Injector' and plough operations will bury the cable in a narrow trench of about 0.25 metre in width to a depth of up to 5 metres. Both technologies will leave the sea-bed virtually undisturbed.

The works are scheduled to start in June and be completed by July this year.

The extent of the area affected is described in a notice published in the Gazette today (March 23). Any person who considers that he has an interest, right or easement in or over the foreshore and sea-bed involved may send a written objection to the Director of Lands on or before May 23, 2001.

The notice together with a related plan can be seen at the Lands Department Survey and Mapping Office, 23rd Floor, North Point Government Offices, 333 Java Road; Sai Kung District Office, 2nd Floor, Sai Kung Government Offices, 34 Chan Man Street, Sai Kung; and at the Tseung Kwan O Sub-office, Sai Kung District Office, Public Enquiry Service Centre, Po Ning House, Po Lam Estate, Tseung Kwan O.
