China sets targets for
key economic sectors
(08/06/2001) (xinhua)
The Chinese government made public on Sunday a set of plans
for a dozen crucial economic areas that it will give priority to over the next five years.
The State Development Planning Commission announced that it
has drafted special plans for such key areas as urbanization, population, employment and
social security, science, technology and education, ecological development and
environmental protection, water conservancy, integrated transport systems, energy
development, accession to the World Trade Organization, utilization of information
technology and development of the western regions of China.
According to the commission, the subjects of the special
plans are either key areas of the country's reform and modernization drive or weak links
in the economy that need immediate improvement.
The special plans are more detailed than the 10th Five-Year
Plan, which the Chinese government has drafted for the 2001-2005 period.
All these plans will be publicized in the Chinese media from
next week.
